REMINISCENCE BASED MULTIMODAL SENSORY STIMULATION
KEITH S. SAVELL, Ph.D., C.T.R.S.
SIENNA BOOTHMAN, B.S., C.T.R.S.
Reminiscence Based Multimodal Sensory Stimulation (RBMSS) is a program
designed to enhance cognitive functioning through direct stimulation of each of the
five senses: olfactory (smell), tactile (touch), auditory (sound), gustatory (taste) and
vision. This "best practice" approach to sensory stimulation is most appropriate for
the lower functioning resident who
- is limited in his/her ability to interact with the environment due to
physical and/or cognitive limitations;
- has minimal ability to interact in a meaningful manner with his/her
environment and may experience difficulty expressing needs, wants
desires and/or emotions;
- has demonstrated ADL (self care) deficits - requiring moderate to
maximum assistance within all ADL areas;
- demonstrates physically non-aggressive behavior such as
wandering, restlessness or repetitive movement; and
- displays passive behaviors such as social isolation, disengagement
and/or emotional withdrawal.

Skilled Nursing Facility Guidelines:
Sexuality and the Pursuit of Intimacy:
Issues surrounding sexuality and the pursuit of intimacy within Skilled Nursing
Facilities requires sensitivity, forethought and well established guidelines.
Sensitivity guarantees the rights of competent adults to pursue intimate relationships
with dignity. Forethought ensures that all residents (including those who are unable
to say "no" and remove themselves from undesired situations) are protected from
potentially predatory relationships. Well established guidelines provide direction to
the administration and staff to ensure that a "plan" is in place to safeguard the rights
and well being of the residents involved, while complying with the directives from the
physician, the family, and the regulatory body.
- Sexuality Guidelines for Cognitively Well Residents.
- Sexuality Guidelines for Residents with Cognitive Impairment.
- Sexuality Guidelines for Self-Directed/Self-Stimulating Behavior.
- Intimacy and Affection Profile (assessment guidelines)
- Discussion of issues surrounding the pursuit of intimacy, competence and
informed consent.
